A domain name is the words which go after the “http://”
If you want your own website, you need to buy one of these from one of the many companies on line who sell them.
We tend to use Go Daddy and Hostgator when we purchase domain names – but we also know that there are good quality and reputable sites to look at – so please do your own homework and find one that will suit your needs.
Depending on what you want after the dot ( ie. .com.au or .com or .it. or .net. or .info etc) will depend on the cost of the site. Obviously some sites are going to be more expensive than others because of their perceived value.
Australian sites are more regulated than just the .com ones and you generally need a business name or certification to link the website name and your business. Again it varies depending on what you are looking at.
Most domain names are sold on a yearly basis, but more often than not you are offered at the point of purchase to extend this to a 2 or a 5 year ownership at a slight discount.
Most domain names can be bought at around US$10 / AUS$16 per year.
Once you have your domain name secured, you will need to look at hosting. What this means is to find a company who will post up (host) your domain name and make it ‘live’ on the www. Again there are a plethora of companies who have a wide range of products and options. ( check out our page on Hosting Options for more info)
